The jackfruit burger is a popular vegetarian and vegan alternative to the traditional meat burger. The main ingredient is jackfruit, a tropical fruit known for its meat-like texture when cooked. It has a mild flavor that absorbs spices and flavors well, making it a versatile ingredient for a variety of dishes.

For the jackfruit burger, the fruit is typically cooked in some kind of barbecue or seasoning sauce and then shredded to create the appearance of pulled meat. It is then served on a bun, often with various toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and sauces.

One advantage of the jackfruit burger is that it is a good source of fiber and vitamin C. Furthermore, it is often lower in calories and fat than a meat burger.

For the Jackfruit Burger

  • 2 vegan burger buns

  • 1 jar of jackfruit (400g)

  • 6 tbsp vegan BBQ sauce

  • 1 red onion

  • 1 green jalapeno pepper

  • Rub of your choice

  • Salt, black pepper

  • Oil for frying

  • Margarine for brushing

For the Coleslaw

  • 200 g pointed cabbage

  • 1 carrot

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 tsp caraway powder

  • Black pepper

6-step preparation

  1. Prepare the Coleslaw:

Remove the stalk from the pointed cabbage and cut into thin strips. Peel and coarsely grate the carrot.

In a bowl, combine salt, sugar, cumin powder, olive oil, and white wine vinegar, then knead thoroughly with your hands. Season with pepper and let stand for at least 15–30 minutes.

  2. Prepare the burger ingredients:

Peel the onion and slice into thin rings. Slice the green jalapeño into thin rings. Drain the jackfruit and let it drain well. Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat.

  3. Fry the jackfruit:

Add the jackfruit to the pan and fry for about 5 minutes on all sides. Season with a rub of your choice and fry for another 2 minutes.

Add the vegan BBQ sauce, mix well, remove from the heat, and shred the jackfruit with a fork. Set aside.

  4. Prepare the grill:

Preheat the gas grill to medium direct heat. Place the grill plate, smooth side up, in the direct heat zone.

  5. Toast the buns:

Cut open the burger buns and brush both cut sides with a little margarine. Toast them cut-side down on a reversible grill for about 30 seconds until golden brown.

  6. Assemble the burgers:

Top the bottom buns with coleslaw, warm jackfruit, jalapeño rings, and onions. Place the top buns on top and serve.

💡 Save calories –

Total savings potential: 👉 Up to 100–150 kcal per serving if you:

  • Reduce BBQ sauce to 3–4 tablespoons or use a low-sugar version

  • Use oil sparingly when frying and in the slaw (1 tablespoon each instead of 2, plus additional oil spray instead of pouring it freely)

  • Omit margarine from the bun or spread it very thinly

  • Replace olive oil in coleslaw with 1 tablespoon of yogurt (vegan) or mustard vinaigrette

  • Replace sugar in coleslaw with a calorie-free substitute (e.g., erythritol)

👉 This keeps the burger smoky, juicy, and fresh, while significantly reducing fat and sugar
