Onion Rings with Camembert Cheese
300 g Camembert
2 large onions
100 g flour
150 g breadcrumbs
2–4 eggs
Cooking oil
Cranberries
Preparation in 7 steps
Prepare the onions:
Peel the onions and cut them into thick rings. Make sure the rings aren't too thin so they crisp up nicely when fried.
Prepare the Camembert:
Cut the Camembert into small strips that fit inside the onion rings. If you like it extra creamy, you can also freeze the Camembert slightly to prevent it from melting too much when fried.
Prepare the breading station:
Prepare three deep plates or bowls:
Spread the flour in the first plate.
Whisk the eggs in the second plate.
Prepare the breadcrumbs in the third plate.
Fill the onion rings:
Place a strip of Camembert cheese in each onion ring and gently press the ring together to ensure the cheese is well wrapped.
Bread:
First coat the filled onion rings in flour, then dip them in the egg, and finally coat them in the breadcrumbs until evenly coated.
Fry:
Heat enough cooking oil in a pan so that the onion rings can swim in it. Fry the rings one at a time until golden brown and crispy (about 2–3 minutes per side).
Drain on a kitchen towel to remove any excess oil.
Tip:
Serve the onion rings with delicious cranberries!
💡 Save calories –
Total savings potential: 👉 Up to 200–300 kcal per serving if you:
Reduce Camembert to 200g (instead of 300g) or use a light Camembert
Use only 2 eggs for the breading – 4 are way too many for 2 servings
Limit breadcrumbs to 100g – often, some go unused anyway
Fry the onion rings and cheese in the air fryer or oven instead of oil
Use cranberries in moderation (they're sweet, but also high in calories)
👉 This keeps the dish crispy, cheesy, and savory-sweet, but with significantly less fat and calories – perfect for a lighter version!
